What opportunities will this course give me?
Learning a new skill is both stimulating and rife with social opportunities; our Glass Engraving course is a brilliant way to tick both these boxes.
You'll explore and develop the intricate art of engraving glass, as well as the rich history and legacy of the craft. Our learners leave the programme confident and excited to produce their own unique pieces of work, both for pleasure and presentation.
On completion of the course, you'll have the opportunity to join the Guild of Glass Engravers and connect with talented and like minded people, plus be invited to take part in Guild events.
What will I be learning?
Beginners will be introduced first to hand engraving, and a little later to the basics of drill engraving. Learners will then, with guidance, be able to select a specialism. More experienced engravers will receive help in specialist areas.
Learners will be taught to use a variety of diamonds, stones and polishers. They will receive help and guidance with the particular challenges of designing for glass, and will be encouraged to tackle a wide variety of subjects.
Learners will be able to produce a basic piece of hand engraving in stipple and/or line. They will also be able to produce a basic piece of drill work.
A College Certificate will be awarded on request.
Why is this course for me?
Glass engraving is a fascinating and continuously growing medium. The potential for design is enormous, with endless effects to be made through simple mark making and various methods.
You'll be part of a friendly group, matched up with learners who have attended our programme for over 25 years, as well as those who have only just approached the craft.
It's the perfect combination of studying and socialising; we pride ourselves on hosting a fun, engaging environment.
How will my learning be enhanced?
Knowledge and skills can be enhanced through recommendations of off site trips from the tutor and other experienced learners.
All learners will also be supported in their entry and progression through the Guild should they be interested. This gives you the opportunity to take part in National Exhibitions; there really are no similar courses like this outside of London.
