What is WorldSkills?
WorldSkills promotes the power and value of professional skills worldwide.
Skills competitions for young learners, apprentices and employees are held all over the world, and aim to inspire young people to choose a skilled career while showcasing the brilliant talent of young people today.
The competitions are split into different skills areas which cover careers in:
- Business Admin and IT
- Built Environment e.g. carpentry and plumbing
- Cultural and Creative Arts e.g. graphic design
- Engineering e.g. automotive and construction
- Professional Services e.g. hairdressing, beauty and catering
National competition heats are held in the UK every year, and students can qualify to take part by competing at smaller, regional activities for their skill.
If successful, entrants get the opportunity to compete at the international WorldSkills compeititons, which take place every two years at different cities around the world. The next final is in 2017 and will be held in Abu Dhabi!
Students at Eastleigh College regularly take part in World Skills. In May 2015, two Apprentice Bench Joiners took part in the Carpentry regional heats and performed brilliantly. Read the story below to find out their thoughts on WorldSkills and how the competition has helped their studies.
