National recognition for student support in Beacon Awards

Eastleigh College have been commended in the RCU Support for Students category of the 2022/23 Beacon Awards.

This commendation follows the launch of our campus Learner Hub last year, which was opened by Eastleigh MP Paul Holmes. This new Learner Hub allowed for the integration of over ten support teams in an accessible open-plan floorspace with new dedicated study areas, bookable meeting rooms and enhanced Wi-Fi capacity. In addition to streamlining support, this development has enabled a large new showpiece area for College functions and events throughout the year.

A full list of support services in the Learner Hub include: Learner Finance, Safeguarding, Careers, Work Experience and industry Placement, Faith, Southern Universities Network, Library, Counselling and Learner Support. Progression Mentors also work from the Hub providing early targeted interventions to support learner attendance.

The RCU Support for Students category recognises colleges that demonstrate innovation, impact and sustainability, while delivering clear and tangible benefits to students. It also looks for evidence of a strong support model that empowers students to have a voice, make their own choices and participate in society – including in college, employment and adult life.

Paul Cox, Principal and CEO of Eastleigh College, said: “Every colleague should feel proud of this commendation which reflects our collective hard work and positive response to the challenges faced in recent years, and our continued commitment to providing the highest levels of help and support to our learners. I’d also like to congratulate the other colleges who were commended in this category.”

Tracey McAdam, Head of The Learner Hub at Eastleigh College, said: “The Learner Hub has become a central and welcoming focal point of the entire College and has made it considerably easier for students to access the full range of student support services. This commendation is a testament to the effectiveness of this transition and the quality of the support that the Hub is now able to provide.”

The Beacon Awards are run by the Association of Colleges and celebrate best practice and innovation among colleges across the country. It recognises the talent and accomplishments of staff at all levels, while highlighting the breadth and quality of education throughout the sector.
