Eastleigh College Diploma Student reaches final of Culinary Arts Competition at WorldSkills UK

Edward Rogers, an 18 year old Level 3 Diploma in Advance Professional Cookery learner at Eastleigh College, has reached the final of the prestigious Culinary Arts Competition at WorldSkills UK in Glasgow this week.

WorldSkills is a global movement of over 80 countries, that supports young people across the world via competitions-based training, assessment and benchmarking, with members’ national teams ultimately testing their ability to achieve world-class standards in the biennial ‘skills olympics’. By reaching the national finals, Edward has the chance to win and go on to represent the UK at WorldSkills Lyon 2024.

Edward is completing a Level 3 Diploma in Advance Professional Cookery at the College and has aspirations of becoming a top flight chef, he said, “I am really enjoying my course and feel I am learning so much that when the opportunity arose to test out my expertise at WorldSkills I jumped at the chance.”

The Culinary Arts competition within WorldSkills assesses the ability of competitors who are expected to have a good knowledge of all aspects of a modern kitchen, along with good cookery and presentation skills and be familiar with the core competencies. They are evaluated on elements such as creativity, hygiene, working under pressure and attention to detail.

Edward is travelling to the competition in Glasgow today with Greg Cheeseman, lecturer in Hospitality and Catering, he said, “Edward has done brilliantly to get this far in the competition, he has been practising none stop and has shown real determination to get to this level. Everyone at the College is very proud of him.”
