We recognise that the move from school to college can appear daunting at first, which is why we have specialist staff available to listen and support you, helping you settle into your new environment quickly.
How do students get support?
Students can indicate on their application form if they have any additional support needs. These will be discussed at interview and if necessary referrals made to the appropriate support team. Students and/or parents can also discuss their individual needs at open events, or arrange a confidential individual consultation before starting at college. Once started at College a student can refer themselves for support at any time. The Student Support Services Manager can be found in the Additional Learning Support Centre at the back of the Learning Centre.
For more details on the full range of support services offered at Eastleigh College please refer to our Student Support Leaflet. You can request a copy of this leaflet by telephoning the Student Support Services Manager on 023 8091 1235 or download this leaflet!
Is it confidential?
We will ask for your permission to advise and guide other staff about barriers you may face. This will help them to make reasonable adjustments to support you. However, information is only shared on a 'need to know' basis. Staff not bound by professional codes of confidentiality may need at times to share concerns about an individual.
Counselling is completely confidential unless something you share with the counsellor may put yourself or others in danger. The Counsellor will inform you that they have a legal duty to share information in these circumstances.

Personal Tutor
When you arrive at College you will be assigned a friendly and approachable personal tutor. A personal tutor is a teacher who delivers more than classroom learning. A tutor will get to know each of his or her students, meeting with them regularly to keep track of their progress through the course, and trying to help with any issues that are making progress difficult. A personal tutor will look after his or her students' interests and make sure the College's services are working for their benefit.
Tutorials
You will also have regular tutorials. During these sessions you will learn skills to prepare you for life and work, as well as having an opportunity to discuss your progress with your tutor on a 1:1 basis. A host of additional activities will be laid on e.g. healthy living week.
Tutorial Support Team
The Tutorial Support Team in College helps hundreds of students to achieve their goals each year. They make sure students attend all their classes and achieve highly on their courses. The Tutorial Support Team will work with students on a one to one basis, assisting them with any difficulties or signposting them to other support services. They liaise with parents/carers and tutors and can act as an intermediate when necessary. In some cases they will set students an action plan to help them manage their studies. They also deliver tutorial workshops to assist tutors in developing students' personal and academic skills. They offer drop in sessions where students can access the tutors and discuss any concerns or issues with them before they start their learning. These are held on:
Careers Library
The Careers Library is filled with a range of reference and guidance materials, including computerised careers packages, to ensure that you are fully informed when making decisions about your future. Individual and group careers interviews are available with trained advisers from the Connexions Service, whilst our Learning Centre staff will help you make the best use of the information available.

The level of support will be determined on your English ability. (You will need a certain level of English to undertake your programme of study.) The ESOL team will carry out an assessment of your skills. If your English needs to be improved before starting a full-time course, you may wish to enrol on our full-time ESOL course. If your English just needs improving, you may wish to undertake a part-time ESOL course alongside your main programme. Alternatively you may need some one to one support to assist you with assignment writing.

We understand being a looked after young person or a young carer doesn't necessarily mean you want to be treated any differently to other students. However there are support mechanisms which can be put in place to support you emotionally, and/or financially. The Student Support Services Manager is the Designated Tutor at Eastleigh College and she will be available at any time to meet with you confidentially to discuss your support needs. You can pop in and see her in her office in the ALS Centre or contact her on 023 8091 1235. Alternatively you could talk to a Tutorial Support Tutor about the support available.
