Taxi drivers in the borough of Eastleigh are amongst the first in the country being offered the chance to sign up to a new NVQ award in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving.
Eastleigh College, in conjunction with Quality Transport Training and Eastleigh Borough Council, recently held a presentation at the council's offices in Leigh Road to promote the new NVQ.
"This is a great opportunity for drivers to be recognised for skills they already possess in not only their driving ability but also in their customer service skills." said Chris Hetherington, Director of Quality Transport Training.
"The course has been specifically designed to fit around candidates and be as flexible as possible. We want this to be a positive experience and something drivers are proud of."
The qualification is currently funded through the Government's Train to Gain Scheme and in most cases will be free to drivers who don't currently hold a Level 2 award.
Whilst currently the NVQ is not a legal requirement, it is expected to become a mandatory requirement for all taxi and private hire drivers in the UK in the near future.
