Eastleigh College Students Make it a Double!

For the second year in a row, Eastleigh College Hospitality and Catering students have won the annual Army Catering Challenge. Held at St. Omer Barracks in Aldershot on the 9th of May, the 15 students were put to the test on their catering and survival skills, with a wide range of challenges. "They did brilliantly", said Eastleigh College Lecturer Alan Humphrey, who attended the event with fellow lecturer Robert Strachan.

Up against three other local colleges, the students undertook a Ready Steady Cook type challenge, improvised with some outside catering, were timed in putting up a camouflaged kitchen and competed in a number of other outdoor activities such as an assault course. "We were the best", said one of the winning students. "It was a really good day all round and everyone enjoyed themselves. The facilities were good, but the assault course was hard and tiring."

The menu for the Ready Steady Cook challenge consisted of seared fresh scallops and fresh grilled king prawns for starters and a medallion of rump steak, pan fried and served on a wild mushroom and potato rosti, served with a red onion sauce for main course.

The team were presented with a trophy and a range of sporting equipment, including footballs, rugby balls, poles and marker cones. They decided to donate this equipment to the students at Eastleigh College's College House, a residential provision catering for students with moderate learning difficulties, and presented them with it at the college this week. The team were very enthusiastic about their win, and are hoping to make it a hatric next year!
