With National Apprenticeship Week in full swing, Eastleigh College visited the Ford Transit Assembly Plant in Southampton this week to see for themselves the success of two of their Ford Apprentices. Ashley Dust, and Ben Woods, both Year 2 apprentices, have been learning new skills that include electrical installation, wielding and how hydraulic and pneumatic systems operate.
Ben, currently undergoing a placement in the Plant's Paint Shop said:
"I started the Apprenticeship, and although I was a couple of years older than most of the students, I met a lot of like-minded people and learnt the skills essential to my job. I enjoy the practical elements of my Apprenticeship. The scheme enables you to be in the driving seat of your own career, and do exactly what you want to do. You are in control of your own future".
Working in partnership with Eastleigh College, Apprenticeships have played a significant role in highlighting Ford's ongoing commitment to investing in training and developing their workforce. John Powell, Training Manager at Ford, said "We are always looking to recruit motivated individuals and always have a high number of applications to join our program. We offer our Apprentices both excellent training and the opportunities to develop within the company. This benefits them as individuals and us as a global manufacturing organisation".
Apprenticeships are an effective way of growing and developing your staff, and are designed to ensure that all training reaches nationally recognised standards. You can enrol existing members of staff on the scheme (aged 16 - 24) or use the College's free recruitment service to find the right person for your vacancy. There are two types of Apprenticeship, Foundation and Advanced, which are NVQ Level 2 and 3 respectively.
