Eastleigh College Foundation Department students took to the stage last week as part of their second annual arts showcase, entitled 'For One Night Only'. The highlight of the event was a colourful display of dance and drama sketches to a packed out audience in the College's Main Hall.
Students on the three Foundation courses, who have a range of learning difficulties, teamed up with the first year 'BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance)' students to produce a variety of dances. Routines included the 'Time Warp', a fast paced, neon spattered dance with all 57 students participating, as well as 'A Question of Sport' and 'A Walk in the Park', light hearted miming sketches. 'Gesture and Balance' changed the pace with a slow, graceful piece to piano music.
The Foundation students paired up with Dance students and performed a lively piece of dance to the Black Eyed Peas hit song 'I've Got a Feeling', featuring Makaton sign language.
Sharon Priest, Course Manager for Skills for Working Life, took a leading role in directing the performance and commented:
"The students were fabulous! I am proud of all of them for being so focussed and working so hard. It's such an achievement. "
Joseph Ford, Owen Cressy, Lucy Emmett, Jackie Cornwell and Katherine Evill, all from the Skills for Working Life course, thoroughly enjoyed the chance to show off their dance skills. They said:
"It was really enjoyable, fantastic and amazing!"
The creativity on display didn't stop at the dance performances, guests were treated to a gallery of artwork by the students in the form of colourful landscape collages, and unique sculptures. At the end of the stage performance students also served visitors with tasty refreshments that they had created in their catering lessons.
The event was a resounding success and raised over £130 for the College charities Cancer Research and the Joe Glover Trust.
