Eastleigh College students were treated to a visit from the Mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Mrs Pamela Holden-Brown, last week. The students involved are all studying on the 'Skills for Working Life' course at the College, and stay residentially at College House Monday to Friday. The young people have a range of learning difficulties, and the unique combination of class work and practical learning they experience during their stay at College House prepares them for the next step towards independent living.
The Mayor enjoyed a guided tour of the facilities from Tracey McAdam, College House Manager, before giving a talk to the students about what her role as Mayor involves, and her chosen charities: The Rainbow Centre, Home-Start Eastleigh and The BIG Art Project.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the talk, and were particularly interested when the Mayor explained that the reason for wearing her ribbon, as opposed to her chain, was due to College House being based in Compton, and so outside of the Eastleigh Borough. The Mayor also kindly invited the students to come and visit her at the Mayor's Parlour at a later date.
The facilities at College House made a great impression on the Mayor and she enjoyed meeting the students:
'I was delighted to visit College House and to meet the very friendly weekly boarders. Eastleigh should be proud of this unique facility for people with learning difficulties. It has received an Outstanding Ofsted Report, it has a Charter Mark and is the only facility of its kind in the country.
I look forward to welcoming the young people to the Mayor's Parlour sometime soon.'
