Eastleigh College second year BTEC National Diploma students came to the end of their course last week, as they put together their final major project. The piece chosen, Alan Ayckbourn's 'Confusions', is a black comedy that depicts everyday suburban problems, and students were able to convey the recurring themes of obsession, isolation and desire for companionship through their performance.
The play was chosen for the students by Performing Arts Course Manager Alexandra Moon, who said:
'I thought an Alan Ayckbourn play would be challenging for the students. Ayckbourn is a prolific English writer and actor, who writes scripts with true-to-life characters who should evoke feelings of empathy, if not sympathy, from an audience'.
The students' unique performance incorporated three interconnected one act plays, linked by character, location or theme. These included: a married man attempting to chat up a much younger girl in a hotel bar, two couples separately eating in the same restaurant who were brought together by revelations of an affair, and five isolated people on four park benches desperately trying to communicate with their neighbour.
The second year students were assisted in the production by five students from the first year BTEC National Performing Arts Diploma, and are now leaving the College to go on to higher education or performing arts schools in London in September 2009.
