In April, five Hampshire companies were awarded the prestigious Eastleigh College Training Ambassador Award, after being nominated by their own employees. The Training Ambassador Awards, designed to recognise companies investing in training and staff development, were held at the College's own 'Red Carpet' restaurant, and presented by local MP Chris Huhne, who commented:
"One thing that always happens in recessions is that businesses inevitably have to cut back on costs. But businesses that want to thrive, and take advantage of the future, don't cut training, because training is investment in the future; it is investment in opportunity and it's investment in change. As a business, if you give up the business of change, if you give up looking for new opportunities, then you're dead."
The five lucky winners, chosen from over one hundred nominations, were Miller Homes, Fleming Park Leisure Centre, Southern Electric Contracting, Abbey House Nursing Home and The Barker Dental Practice.
Award winner Adrian Corser, Construction Director for Miller Homes commented:
"Miller Homes is very pleased to be presented with the Ambassador Training Award. It means a lot to us, because our business is very much a people's business, focused around making sure people have the right training and the right skills for the future, because without training for the future we will not have a business."
Tony Lau-Walker, Chief Executive for Eastleigh College added:
"We have received a record number of nominations this year, which clearly shows employers are still very much investing in their workforce, despite the current climate."
