Eastleigh College students have signed up to take part in Dance for Life 2009, one of the largest youth dance events in the South of England. The British Red Cross visited the College today and met with Performing Arts & Dance students to promote the up and coming event.

Dance for Life 2009 is a celebration of youth dance, dedicated to bringing young people from the local communities together and introducing pupils to dance as a medium to overcome cultural, social and physical barriers. The event is open to everyone 18 and under regardless of their ability.

Eastleigh College students have been invited to create a performance that in some way reflects an aspect of the Red Cross's Work. This may be done through the use of movement, music or costume and the routine will be between three and eight minutes long.

Laura Deacon, Dance for life project manager, said "The British Red Cross is committed to exploring what humanitarian values mean in today's world, and through Dance for Life we are able to actively engage children and teenagers in this process.

This event offers Eastleigh College students the opportunity to raise money for a good cause, a performance platform for their dance, and the chance to research humanitarian issues in a fun way".

Since 2006, over 5,000 young people have joined The Red Cross in this exciting event and have helped raise £64,000 for the charity. Registration is now open for 2009, with five heats being held across Hampshire. This year is set to be the best yet with a total of 47 events nationwide!

The event will help raise money for vulnerable people locally and overseas and Konnie Huq, Blue Peter presenter and ambassador for the charity, is excited about this opportunity to celebrate youth dance.

Konnie said "Dance for life offers such a wonderful opportunity for all young people to perform in a fun and friendly environment. Not only will the young performers be exploring the diversity of dance, but it will give them a greater understanding of how the Red Cross works with vulnerable people in crisis".
