Hampshire Deaf Association spent a day this week at Eastleigh College training students on deaf awareness. Suzanne Chivers, Communications Trainer, and Daniel Morgan, Youth Development Worker, at the association, presented to full-time Professional Catering NVQ years one and two students in order to raise awareness of deafness and cochlear implants. Students learnt about the history of cochlear implants, compared hearing aids and cochlear implants and took part in group work activities and practical exercises, such as lip reading. Daniel is also an ex-student from a local college and wears a cochlear implant himself, which demonstrated to students how it is used.
Robert Strachan, Catering Lecturer at the College, said
'This is a beneficial, new learning experience for the student's. They will learn how cochlear implants work and the interactive session allows students to really get involved and ask questions.'
The College are also donating their kitchens to the Hampshire Deaf Association, to allow them to host a Deaf Cook's cookery session using College kitchen facilities.
