Eastleigh College was host to a number of local Dentists, as well as representatives from Skills for Health and the Wessex Deanery, at the launch of the College's brand new dental surgery training facility. Staff and students showcased the new facilities that include a fully equipped dental surgery and a dark room to develop x-rays. The surgery will be used for teaching the new full-time Dental Nursing Apprenticeship programme that includes: work placements at various surgeries, learning about patient care, the mixing of different materials, cross infection control, health and safety, dealing with medical emergencies in the dental surgery and laying up of correct and identification of instruments.
The programme was developed by Eastleigh College due to a new industry requirement introduced in 2008. Anyone wishing to work as a dental nurse is required to complete a recognised course before undertaking employment.
Julie Baptie, Lecturer in Oral Health at Eastleigh College, said
'The apprenticeship is the way forward as it leads to fully qualified dental nurses ready to enter the work place, helping to relieve the pressures on the employer. We are very proud of the new facilities as they enable the students to have a more hands-on experience, rather than just listening about procedures'.
