Engineering their way to success at Eastleigh College!

E1E2

Eastleigh College is one of the first FE colleges nationally to introduce the brand new 14-19 Diplomas. Over fifty year ten pupils from schools across Eastleigh and surrounding areas have started the new Engineering Diploma and Construction Diploma courses at Eastleigh College this week.

The new Diplomas aim to give students a thorough understanding of each subject, as well as develop key skills to enhance their career prospects. These brand new courses give students the ability to solve problems through combined classroom learning and practical hands-on experience. Students will develop essential skills for work that include creative thinking and teamwork, alongside compulsory subjects like English, maths and ICT.

The Engineering Diploma introduces many key themes of engineering, both past and present. Eastleigh College Engineering Lecturer, Mike Driscoll, commented:
'This is a brand new course designed to expose young people to the world of Engineering. It aims to encourage students to gain experience in building life skills that are required for employment, as well as engineering skills'.

Pupils on the Construction Diploma course will learn various aspects of construction, from the principles of design to visiting interesting construction sites such as St Mary's Stadium and the Spinnacre Tower. Ian Orr, Construction Lecturer at Eastleigh College said
'Students will develop skills for the whole range of construction built environment disciplines. This will enable them to either gain employment in the industry or progress onto higher education opportunities.'

Eastleigh College is currently looking to expand the range of diplomas on offer and aim to introduce further subjects in 2009.
