Students Guide the Way

Eastleigh College Health & Social Care students acted as 'Sighted Guides' at the Sight and Sound exhibition, recently held at the Hampshire Rose Bowl. The Level 2 and 3 students volunteered to guide sight impaired individuals around the exhibition enabling them to access the information and demonstrations.

This was an invaluable experience giving the students an insight in the health and social care sector which they are likely to progress into after their studies. Students took away with them a better knowledge and understanding of the different eye conditions and visual impairments, as well as experiencing firsthand the effects on individuals.

Louise Muncaster, a BTEC (National) Extended Level 3 Diploma student, said:

"I found it very interesting to learn about all of the different types of visual impairments, and also finding out about individual experiences and how they cope with being visually impaired."

The exhibition was organised by the charity Open Sight for individuals with a visual impairment, and showcased various sight impairment technologies, as well as demonstrations and seminars on related subjects. Open Sight is Hampshire's largest charitable organisation working with blind and partially sighted people.
