Eastleigh College's Level 3 Hairdressing students demonstrated their considerable talents with a Titanic-themed catwalk show and competition. Inspired by the forthcoming 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the students created a range of looks from the era and included high bouffant up-do's, feathers, hair pieces, exquisite ball gowns and creative make-up!
The students interpreted the theme through pre and post disaster looks, which amazed a jam-packed audience. Each ensemble was put together by the students themselves, from hair design to sourcing the outfits.
Wendy Cummins, owner of local salon, Quiffys, and also one of
the judging panel, was astounded by the talent on display and
said:
"For me as a hairdresser it's always so incredible to see the
imagination of the students. The time and effort, not only in the
hair but the make-up and the clothing, that the students put in, as
well as thinking about how they're going to present themselves and
their model is just phenomenal. They should all be very proud of
themselves, and the College should be immensely proud of each and
every one of them."
Whilst the audience were treated to a dance performance by the College's Level 2 and 3 Dance students, a contemporary interpretation of the Titanic theme complete with sailor outfits, a panel of six judges deliberated over the winners of the catwalk show.
The judging panel consisted of various local top names from the industry including: Terry and Vicki Steventon from Rage Salon in Bournemouth and members from the awarding body VTCT. Local stylist, Lee Elliot was also a VIP guest at the event. Thanks also go to Romsey based firm, Affinage/ASP, for their great range of hair styling products and the training they give to the students.
The top prize up was a day with renowned British Hairdresser of the Year, Akin Konizi, at the National Hairdressers' Federation Southern Region Hair Show in February. The delighted winner was Sonya Scorey, who said:
"My inspiration comes mostly from the icebergs and the sea. I created a posh, ball-gown look with a very high and neat hairstyle, which is then distorted from being in the water."
Lou Gittens, Head of Faculty at the College, was extremely
impressed with the students' abilities and said:
"Tonight's performance is an excellent example of what vocational
education is all about for young people. The skills, knowledge and
expertise that these students have developed over their time at
Eastleigh College came together in the culmination of this
excellent show. We have young people who are now ready to progress
into industry and to develop lifelong careers."
Over £260 was raised from ticket sales and will go to Solent Mind, the charity chosen by the group of students. Representatives we are present at the show to talk about the charity, which provides a wide range of high quality services to support people with mental health problems across the Southern Region.
