Eastleigh College celebrated another successful year of creativity at the College's annual Floristry Open Evening. The event showcased creative floral designs by the College's very own full and part-time students as well as an inspiring demonstration by David Denyer, Interflora World Cup Winner and Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medallist!

Designer David Denyer started the evening with a master class in creating innovative floral designs to a packed out audience of budding florists. Students then showcased their imaginative floral pieces, the combination of a year's study, which were entered into one of seven competitions. Competition categories included 'Create an interpretative arrangement to depict a music legend', featuring musicians such as Madonna and Bob Marley.

The big winner of the evening was Katrina Holmes who won first place in Class D, 'Create a wall hanging design suitable for hanging in a modern converted barn type building', and 'Best in Show' for her stunning Olympic-inspired floral design.

Katrina said:

"I was really shocked to have won two awards, I only joined the floristry course in January, but I am really enjoying the course and everything it has to offer!"

Amy Lavin, who won Class C, 'Create a novelty design to be carried by a teenage bridesmaid', said:

"I feel shocked to have won, I wasn't expecting it at all because there were so many stunning designs, but I am really happy to have won first place."

Other winners included Rosemary Skeats for her colourful hand tied posy, and Victoria Saunders for her beach themed centre piece.

Lisa Crook, floristry lecturer, said:

"The whole evening was very enjoyable and successful. The David Denyer demonstration was entertaining and inspiring, giving some very good ideas and tips to the audience. The competition work, by students of all levels, showed a very high standard over the seven competitions, which were admired by all who attended."
