Eastleigh College apprentice, Steven Burge, recently competed at a national competition for young refrigeration engineers, SkillFRIDGE, held at Walsall College. The SkillFRIDGE competition is designed to promote standards and skills in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry, and help to raise young people's awareness of the career opportunities within the industry.

The two-day semi-finals of the competition gave the judges plenty of time to assess each entrants' performance, based on a series of challenging practical tests reflecting their day-to-day work, along with a test of their theoretical knowledge. The practical element was centred on creation of wiring diagrams, then installation of wiring circuits and components to precise specifications and safety guidelines.

Steven won third place at the challenging competition, and will now begin preparation for the national finals held in Leeds in September. For winning third place, Steven was presented with a range of new tools and equipment.

SummitSkills head of competitions, Neil Collishaw, said:

"The competitions over the course of the two days were of a high standard. These young people are the next generation of refrigeration engineers that will lead the way in their field."
