An Electrifying Start For Sharni

An Electrifying Start For Sharni

Barnes and Liddiard Ltd, an electrical contracting company based in Alresford, believe people are the lifeblood of their business. As keen advocates of Apprenticeships, they use the scheme on an annual basis to replenish and grow their workforce, and consequently the company.

In early 2011, Sharni Gibbs contacted the company to see if they could offer her work experience while at school. Such was the impression she made in the first week of work experience, Managing Director David Liddiard was happy to offer her an Apprenticeship with Barnes and Liddiard when she completed her GCSEs. Now, six months into her Electrical Apprenticeship, neither are regretting their decision. Sharni said:

"I've always wanted a career within a trade, and being local I was already aware of the reputation of this company. I was made very welcome during my work experience, and I think I've fitted into the team really well. I like the variety of jobs I'm doing, I wasn't expecting it to be this interesting. I also enjoy the theory work I do at Eastleigh College, and I'm really happy I came here after school."

David is equally happy with the progress Sharni has made so far.

"We always look for someone who will fit in well with us. We find Apprenticeships are a great way of growing our workforce; we can train them in our own practices and make sure they work to the level we expect. We usually give potential apprentices work experience, as much for them to see if they would be happy working with us, as it is for us to see their attitude and potential."

Sharni has already begun looking to the future, and plans to undertake further qualifications once she's gained more experience on-the-job. She said:

"I would love to still be here in five years time, perhaps helping to train other apprentices. I'm really enjoying the practical work, and I'd like to take a course on inspection and testing further down the line so I can do even more."

Not being a stereotypical electrical apprentice, Sharni is quick to recommend the scheme to everyone, regardless of any pre-conceptions that may exist. She said:

"I'd definitely recommend Apprenticeships, they're a great way of getting started in a career, and the support you receive from your employer and college is fantastic. The practical experience is really beneficial, and it's great fun as well!"
