Entry requirements:

BTEC Level 2, NVQ Level 2 Diploma or Apprenticeship

Progression:

Level 3 course, Advanced Apprenticeship, Employment

At least 4 GCSEs at A*-C (English and Maths preferred) or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit or Distinction Level. There will be an interview and/or assessment.

Duration:

2 Years

Qualifications you could gain:

BTEC Level 3 (and Extended Level 3), NVQ Level 3 Diploma or Advanced Apprenticeship

Progression:

Higher Education: Degree/HND/HNC, NVQ Level 4, Higher Apprenticeship, Employment

1 or 2 Years

Qualifications you could gain:

HNC, CertHE, NVQ Level 4 or Higher Apprenticeship

BTEC Level 5 qualification or Employment

Why study this course?

This is the course for you if you are interested in having a career within the visual arts industries and who have creative interests and abilities. It offers the opportunity to develop skills within many areas including Photography, Design, Graphics, Illustration, Fine Art, Fashion & Textiles, Print Based & Digital Media, Animation & Film.

What qualifications do I need?

You will need minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade A*-D or above, preferably including one or more from Art, Design, Graphics or Media. An appropriate Introductory Certificate in Vocational Studies may also be considered.

Students should also have good attendance and attainment reports from their previous school or college demonstrating interest and commitment to study, and successfully complete a college interview.

What does the course involve?

You will have the opportunity to explore a broad range of subjects within the area of art, design & media. Students will learn and develop skills through the use of industry standard software and facilities, preparing them for progression to level 3 qualifications in Extended Diploma in Art & Design or Creative Media Production.

How will I learn?

You will also be able to study aspects of professional practice within the art & design industry as part of the course. We offer a unique programme of workshops in the first term, allowing students to gain experience in using the equipment and facilities within the department and develop focused technical knowledge.

How will I be assessed?

Projects will be professionally based and will allow you to explore design development, computer imaging techniques, visual recording techniques and visual communication methods. All assignments and projects are closely focused on individual and personal development.

What are the career / progression opportunities?

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art Design & Media opens the door to employment and further study. Depending on final achievement grade can provide an entry to relevant level 3 programmes such as Extended Diploma in Art, Design & Media courses, which in turn provides access to a huge range of level 4 Higher Education programmes, e.g. HND, HNC, Foundation Degree or BA (HONS) courses & new apprenticeships.

What else do I need to know?

Students will benefit from a range of day and residential study visits to venues such as London, Bristol, Oxford, Berlin & Florence. Other opportunities have included specialist workshops run by visiting artists, such as Textile Designer - Lucy McLoughlin, Fine Artist - Roy Brown & Fashion Stylist - Jennifer Anyan. You will be required to purchase an Art & Design kit and A1 portfolio to equip you for your course. Details and information about this will be provided at interview.
