Why study this course?
This one year course is suitable for candidates who have completed the Level 2 qualification or who have extensive suitable motor vehicle experience.
You will have the opportunity to develop the automotive engineering skills essential for employment and progression.
What qualifications do I need?
You must have completed a minimum level 2 qualification in vehicle technology or other relevant automotive qualification. Additionally 4 GCSE grades A*-C or Level 2 Key or Functional skills or able to prove good standards of written English. Good attendance and behaviour reports would support your application.
Direct entry onto this qualification is only available for candidates with relevant prior experience/qualifications but will be assessed on an individual basis.
What does the course involve?
Units of study would include both Mandatory and Optional units covering some of the list below,
• Vehicle Chassis Systems – including brakes, steering and suspension
• Vehicle Engine Systems – petrol and diesel systems
• Vehicle Electrical Systems – including charging, starting and electronics
• Vehicle Transmission Systems – manual and automatic
• Identifying Vehicle and Customer Needs
How will I learn?
You will learn & develop your skills through a mixture of lessons, demonstrations, assignments & practical tasks in the college workshops and classrooms.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a combination of:
• Workshop based competence tasks and questioning.
• Written self study assignments.
• External on-line testing.
You will be guided to produce a portfolio of evidence to show your competence and understanding of the qualification and skills.
What are the career / progression opportunities?
This Level 3 qualification prepares candidates for employment in the industry and contributes towards the VCQ Level 3. Progression to Higher Education or apprenticeship may also be possible.

What else do I need to know?
You will need to provide suitable overalls and safety boots. These must always be worn during practical activities in the workshops to ensure safety is maintained.
