What are Apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are work-based leaning programmes that combine on and off-the-job training, designed by employers for employers, therefore tailored to meet the needs of each specific industry sector. An individual gains a nationally recognised qualification whilst working for an employer and the employer gets a work-ready or better skilled employee who can learn on the job.
Apprenticeships bring considerable value to organisations, employers, individuals and the economy. Businesses across the country are now increasingly realising the enormous benefits that Apprenticeships create, not only in terms of a highly skilled workforce but also by boosting productivity and staff retention. Research undertaken by the National Apprenticeships Service (NAS) shows they are an optimal way of training, developing and skilling people for the future, helping businesses secure a supply of people with the skills and qualities they need and which were often not available on the external job market.
We are continuously seeking to offer a more flexible, less
bureaucratic approach to all types of Government funded provision
and provide the best advice possible to employers seeking to take
increased ownership of training provision.
How do Apprenticeships work?
Generally the apprentice will be required to attend College on a day-release schedule, usually one day per week. Some frameworks also offer the training in a block-release pattern, which some employers may prefer to fit into their working patterns.
We are now able to also offer fully work-based Apprenticeships in a range of different areas - call the Eastleigh College Training Agency (ECTA) on 023 8091 1226 or email ecta@eastleigh.ac.uk for more information.

Apprenticeships usually incorporate an NVQ, a technical certificate relevant to the industry sector and Functional Skills such as numeracy, literacy and IT. All Apprenticeships have an element of Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) included, covering employment law that is there to protect employees and make sure everyone is treated fairly. Some also feature additional qualifications relevant to the role and Framework. Rather than just seeking to demonstrate competence in the particular job role, Apprenticeships are designed to give the apprentice the capabilities to progress their career, offering additional and long-term value to their employer.
All apprentices will be required to maintain a Log Book throughout their Apprenticeship. This log book will contain a record of time spent learning or training, both on and off-the-job, including those spent with a mentor in the workplace.
What are NVQs?
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are nationally recognised qualifications gained in the workplace, demonstrating competence in the particular job role.
The NVQs offered at Eastleigh College are predominantly Level 2 and 3, equivalent to 5 GCSE's (A*-C) and 2 A-Levels respectively.
Apprenticeships and NVQs are open to anyone aged 16 and over, who are not taking part in full-time education at the start of the programme.
