Who is the course suitable for?

This course is suitable for students who want a part time route to progress on to the Access to HE course and eventually to a course at University. It is preferable to have a good set of GCSE results or equivalent, especially in English language, plus Maths and Science if you are considering selecting these subjects on the course. Literacy, numeracy and science comprehension skills will be assessed at interview. You also need to be able to have some basic IT skills, beyond emailing and internet. If English is not your first language, you will need to have a qualification such as IELTS (average 6.0 or above) CAE or a full SFL ESOL at Level 2. Your interview will help us to decide whether the programme is suitable for you. You should consider enrolling on Numeracy, Literacy or IT courses to brush up your skills before the course. Many of these courses are free. Enquire at Customer Services 023 8091 1299 or ask the Course Manager.

What will I learn, how will I be assessed and what qualifications will I achieve?

To gain the NOCN Progression Qualification, you will need to study one subject from the list below, plus Study Skills. We will help you select a suitable subject at interview. You will need to attend for 2 three hours sessions per week, in the daytime or evening, plus occasional progress interviews. You will need to allow plenty of time to study at home to complete background reading, homework, coursework and revise for exams. All subjects are taught from 0930 - 1230, 1300 - 1600 or 1800 -2100hrs.

• Biology
• Chemistry
• Mathematical Studies (Advanced level)
• Health Studies
• Literary Studies
• Psychology
• Sociology
Subjects will run according to demand. If you also need to study for a GCSE in Maths, English, Science, Human Biology or an IELTS course for Speakers of Other Languages, you will need to apply to do this separately; please enquire at customer services. The Pathway to Access Course is a one year, part-time course, aimed at mature students who have some vocational experience, and want to start gaining qualifications for entry to University. It leads to a NOCN Qualification in Progression at Level 3, which can be used to exempt you from part of the full Access to HE Diploma course the following year, so you would take two years to get to university using this route. The course is very flexible, so it can be tailored to suit your individual needs; you can opt to study in the daytime or the evenings and there is a good range of subjects to choose from. You can use this course as a part-time route into Higher Education to study a wide range of degree subjects, for example: Nursing, Medicine, Midwifery, Teaching, Social Work, Psychology, Maths, Business Studies and many more. (If you would prefer a full-time, one year route into Higher Education, please enquire about our full-time Access to HE Diploma course). You will be studying alongside the full-time Access Diploma students and completing the same assessments. There is a demanding assessment programme of assignments and examinations throughout the year. Exams account for a maximum of 40% of the assessment. Assignments could involve writing an essay or a report or giving a presentation. The course is divided into separate units taught at Level 3 (academically similar to A Levels) There will be lectures, class discussions; small group work, individual research and practical work in some subjects. Your weekly Study Skills session will help you to learn more efficiently and produce your work professionally to prepare you for your course at University. Your personal tutor will support you during the course and help you plan your career. Further one to one support is also available for students with particular needs e.g. dyslexia and for anyone who needs extra help.
