Who is the course suitable for?
For graduates and non-graduates who will be in a "full" teaching role for the duration of the course. The "full" teaching role must involve planning for, delivery to, and assessment of groups of learners, using a range of materials and methods. It doesn't mean that you need to have a full time job doing this.
What is required to join this course?
You will need to have at least 50 hours of teaching in a full teaching role in each year of the course. GCSE English and Maths, or Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy, are also strongly recommended. You will need good literacy skills to meet the requirements of the coursework.
What will I learn, how will I be assessed and what qualifications will I achieve?
Year 1 – Planning, Assessing & Evaluating and Learning Programmes, Theories & Principles for Planning & Enabling Learning in a Specialist Subject area. Year 2 – Professional Practice in the Lifelong Learning Sector, Curriculum Design in a Specialist Subject Area.
The Certificate in Education from the University of Portsmouth has been designed to meet the national requirements of the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector; the Professional Graduate Certificate is similar to the former Post Graduate Certificate.
The course is assessed by written work, observation of teaching and a teaching practice file. You will develop the skills required to be a reflective teacher in the Lifelong Learning Sector. You will receive either a Certificate (Level 5) or a Professional Graduate Certificate (Level 6) in Post Compulsory Education from the University of Portsmouth.
How will the course be taught?
The course will be taught by a mixture of lectures, seminars, group work and guided self study. Individual tutorials are an important part of the course.
What are the career/progression opportunities?
You will be able to obtain your Licence to Practice (QTLS) after you have achieved the Certificate or Professional Graduate Certificate, assuming that you can prove competence at Level 2 in Numeracy and Literacy (equivalent to GCSE A-C). From the Certificate you can also progress to a Degree in Education; from the Professional Graduate Certificate you can progress to Post Graduate study.
What additional resources are required and what should I bring to the first class?
Instructions will be given after application.
