Who is the course suitable for?

This course is essential for middle managers who are seeking to enhance their management skills and knowledge whilst introducing a variety of management techniques to support their role within the organisation.

The Edexcel BTEC Level 5 professional qualification is designed to be flexible in its approach, with learners able to progress through different sized qualifications from the Award (10 credits), Certificate (20 credits) to the Diploma (40 credits and above). Each unit within the qualification has a credit value which can be accumulated to build from the Award through to the Diploma. All units are internally assessed through work based assignments. The BTEC Level 5 qualifications are designed to give learners an understanding of the skills needed within vocational sectors.

What is required to join this course?

The applicant must show an ability to progress to a Level 5 qualification. For learners who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:

-A level 3 course in a related subject e.g. business, management, administration, customer service
-An Advanced/Advanced Subsidiary GCE profile which demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject, or an adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at level A*–C
-Other related level 3 or 4 qualifications
-Appropriate work/management experience

More mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include, extensive work experience (paid and/or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.

There is an expectation that applicants are computer literate and can use MS Word.

If you wish to discuss the course or your suitability before you enrol please contact Tony Howson by phone (023 8091 1027) or email (thowson@eastleigh.ac.uk).

What will I learn, how will I be assessed and what qualifications will I achieve?

This course builds from the Edexcel BTEC Level 5 Award qualification (units completed at QCF BTEC level 5 Award and Certificate in Management and Leadership will count towards this qualification and not be repeated). Students will complete units:

1. Principles of Management & Leadership
2. Managing Change
3. Principles of Strategic Management
4. Communications at Work
5. Recruitment and Selection
6. Managing Projects

The units are assignment based and are internally assessed.

This is a 35 week course which starts at the beginning of February and completes at the end of January the following year. There is a break from the end of June to the beginning of September.

How will the course be taught?

Topic input, group discussions, problem solving, research and work based activities to enable you to put theory into practice. Builds from the Level 3 qualification and enables candidates to learn, understand and use management skills in the workplace within a range of differing disciplines. You will need to set aside an additional one day a week self study.

This course can be delivered through a blended learning approach. Two units (including the mandatory unit) must be completed in the classroom and four units may be completed through distance learning. Any blended learning must be agreed with the Course Manager and will depend on academic skills and workplace experience.

What are the career/progression opportunities?
