Who is the course suitable for?

The course is aimed at those who wish to further their study in the stitched textiles field. Students are likely to come from a stitch/art/design background.

This qualification has been developed as a progression route, to follow on from Level 3 stitch courses offered at Eastleigh College and elsewhere.

What is required to join this course?

Students will need to demonstrate both suitability for and commitment to the programme. Students who enter with the following qualifications are likely to benefit more readily from the programme. However, all appropriate pre-qualifications will be considered.

- C&G 7113 Stitched Textile programme at Level 3 for at least 180 hours.
- Equivalent Stitched Textiles course of 180 hours (at Level 3 standard).
- Equivalent Art/Design course of 180 hours (at Level 3 standard) with significant stitch experience.
- Employer reference indicating training to an appropriate level.

What will I learn, how will I be assessed and what qualifications will I achieve?

The course is studied over a period of three years, and those who pass the required modules will gain the Foundation Degree in Stitched Textiles.

FdA Stitched Textiles module structure

On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded the Foundation Degree in Stitched Textiles. Assessment is continuous, being internally assessed by the teaching staff and externally verified by the awarding body.

Modules will be assessed through practical assessments, reflective journals, research, essays and presentations. All criteria must be successfully met in order to pass the module. All modules must be passed to achieve the qualification.

How will the course be taught?

Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, monitoring and evaluating their own work and personal development. Students will develop skills that they can apply immediately within a work environment. This means working on both projects and assignments as an individual and in group situations. Students develop skills in problem solving, planning and scheduling, group work, team working, personal development, research, report writing and presentations. Throughout the course, students will keep personal journals to record personal development, design development and statements of intent.

What are the career/progression opportunities?

The knowledge and skills learned at this level will enable students to consolidate their knowledge, provide students with the confidence to develop their own practice, and enable them to either run their own studio or to further study on a BA course.

What additional resources are required and what should I bring to the first class?

Pen and paper.

Are there any other costs involved?

Costs not covered by the tuition/qualification fees are:
• Fabrics, threads and stitch materials
• Papers, paints, art materials
• Course books

A reading list will be supplied for each module (books are not provided but may be found in the college or department library). Students are able to pay by instalments if required.
