At least 4 GCSEs at A*-C (English and Maths preferred) or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit or Distinction Level. There will be an interview and/or assessment.

2 Years

BTEC Level 3 (and Extended Level 3), NVQ Level 3 Diploma or Advanced Apprenticeship

Progression:

Higher Education: Degree/HND/HNC, NVQ Level 4, Higher Apprenticeship, Employment

1 or 2 Years

Who is the course suitable for?

Anyone with a suitable Diploma, prior learning or practice in Counselling who wants to 'top up' and attain an Honours degree.

What is required to join this course?

Candidates will have completed an HND, FdA or DipHE bearing 240 CATS points in an appropriate pathway. All applicants will be interviewed prior to acceptance.

What will I learn, how will I be assessed and what qualifications will I achieve?

Studied over two years, the course incorporates the following modules:
Contemporary Developments in Counselling
Counselling in Contexts
Development and Context Issues in Supervision
Gender and Human Sexuality
Integrating Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches with Humanistic Practice
Research Project and Dissertation (Double module)
Working with Trauma

Students are required to:
Attend a minimum of 80% of all the sessions.
Be involved in Continuing Personal Development.
Have professional indemnity insurance - to cover your counselling practice.
Hold professional membership of BACP or other professional organisation, for example BPS or UKCP, and to work within the ethical codes of the organisation(s).
Be in supervised counselling practice - you will need to be in a suitable placement or private practice with a view to gaining your BACP accreditation. For this you will be expected to keep a brief log of client hours and clinical supervision. The BA (Hons) Counselling is awarded by the University of Winchester. Assessment is continuous, being internally assessed by the teaching staff and externally verified by the Validating Body. It incorporates a variety of methods appropriate to theoretical and practical situations. On successful completion of the course you will be awarded BA (Hons) Counselling.

Modules will be assessed through assignments, reflective journals, role-play, research essays, presentations, case studies and a research project. All criteria must be successfully met in order to complete the module. All modules must be completed to achieve the qualification. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, monitor and evaluate their own work and personal development. Group learning, lectures, case studies, individual learning, role play, research, client log, essays and research project. Students will be expected to draw upon their clinical and personal experience as both counsellor and client. The knowledge and skills learned at this level will enable students to further enhance their communication skills at work in their career as a professional counsellor, working towards personal accreditation.
