Entry requirements:

Generally at least 4 GCSEs at A*-G (or equivalent), although some courses may require no formal qualifications. There will be an interview and/or assessment.

Duration:

1 Year

Further courses at Level 1 or 2

At least 4 GCSEs at A*-D or an equivalent Level 1 qualification. There will be an interview and/or assessment.

Duration:

1 Year

Qualifications you could gain:

BTEC Level 2, NVQ Level 2 Diploma or Apprenticeship

Progression:

Level 3 course, Advanced Apprenticeship, Employment

Entry requirements:

At least 4 GCSEs at A*-C (English and Maths preferred) or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit or Distinction Level. There will be an interview and/or assessment.

Duration:

2 Years

Qualifications you could gain:

BTEC Level 3 (and Extended Level 3), NVQ Level 3 Diploma or Advanced Apprenticeship

Progression:

Higher Education: Degree/HND/HNC, NVQ Level 4, Higher Apprenticeship, Employment

Entry requirements:

Level 3 qualification

Duration:

1 or 2 Years

Qualifications you could gain:

HNC, CertHE, NVQ Level 4 or Higher Apprenticeship

Progression:

BTEC Level 5 qualification or Employment

Entry requirements:

Level 4 qualification

1 Year

Qualifications you could gain:

BTEC Level 5 Diploma, DipHE, NVQ Level 5, HND or Foundation Degree

Who is the course suitable for?

This course aims to meet your needs if you are at, or aspiring to, technician level under the metals and engineering award. The course consists of technical modules drawn from a number of disciplines including civil, structural, mechanical and manufacturing.

What will I learn, how will I be assessed and what qualifications will I achieve?

The units of study include the following units:-
• ETA/001 Engineering and Environmental Health & Safety
• ETA/002 Organisational Efficiency and Improvement
Plus optional units: -
• ETA/006 Computer Aided Design (CAD) Techniques
• ETA/009 Electrical and Electronic Principles
• ETA/028 Maintenance Engineering Principles
• ETA/030 General Maintenance Techniques
• ETA/039 Mechanical Engineering Principles
• ETA/042 Inspection/Quality Control This level 3 Diploma course is designed to encompass a diverse range of engineering skills, and would suit candidates who wish to progress from level 2 qualifications, or simply need to complete a level 3 qualification on a day release basis in order to enable achievement of Apprenticeship frameworks. It is gained by attending College 1 day per week for two years, and completion of an external examination set by the Awarding body. The course will be taught via a mixture of classroom and practical workshop activities, which include practical and written tests and the use of inter-active equipment. Throughout this course, you will learn a variety of different ‘multi-skill disciplines’:
• Applying principles of occupational health and safety in work environment
• Appropriate use and management of hand tools
• Power tools/hand held operation, performing basic machining processes
• Apply basic fabrication and pipe fitting techniques
• Producing basic engineering sketches and drawings
• The use of fabrication and machining techniques to produce basic engineering components and products
• Producing drawings manually and using AutoCAD
• Operate computing packages
• Applying mathematical solutions to engineering problems
• Applying scientific principles to engineering problems
• Material testing

How will the course be taught?

The course will be taught via a mixture of classroom and practical workshop activities, which include practical and written tests and the use of inter-active equipment.

What are the career/progression opportunities?

Following successful completion of the Diploma, candidates can complete BTEC National Diplomas, HNCs in Engineering or other related areas.

What additional resources are required and what should I bring to the first class?

Pen, pencil, A4 paper and a ring binder, plus a scientific calculator.

Are there any other costs involved?

No.

Payment is accepted by cheque, credit or debit card at the time of enrolment.

The only means tested benefits Colleges are able to accept this year will be Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) and Employment Support Allowances (ESA) in the Work Related Activity.
