What is vocational training?
Vocational courses are an alternative to A Levels. They provide you with the skills, knowledge and undertstanding specific to a trade or industry. The focus is on developing knowledge and practical experience rather than pure theory. Doing as well as thinking. There is of course classroom based learning, but the overall experience is far more hands-on than studying A Levels.
Nationally recognised qualifications
Vocational qualifications are nationally recognised and highly respected, particularly by employers. In these competitive times, having practical experience behind you can give you the edge in your job search. Qualifications include:
- Certificates
- Diplomas
- Extended/Advanced Diplomas
- NVQs
There are a range of other industry specific qualifications on offer too. What you choose will depend on what subject you want to study and which level is suitable for you.
Is vocational right for me?
Vocational courses are an excellent choice if you already have a particular career path in mind. They are also particularly suited to students who prefer the practical side of learning to sitting in a classroom.
If you are not sure what you want to do yet, it is worth finding out about a few of the courses on offer and viewing the facilities at one of our open days. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have and guide you through the decision-making process.
Can a vocational qualification get me into university?
Yes! Progression depends on the course you choose, the level you start at, and the goals you wish to achieve. Many of the courses on offer qualify for UCAS points which you need in order to study Higher Education at university.
Other progression opportunities may include further training, an apprenticeships, or employment. You will find details of possible progression clearly stated on the individual course information pages.
Key Skills
All students will work towards gaining the valuable Key Skills of Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology.
An independent qualification, Key Skills can be studied at a level between 1-5, enabling you to concentrate on your strengths and choose the level appropriate to your needs. As well as providing you with valuable skills for employment, you will also be awarded additional UCAS points for university entry. The number of points awarded is dependent on the Key Skills level achieved in each subject.
