Entry requirements:

At least 4 GCSEs at A*-D or an equivalent Level 1 qualification. There will be an interview and/or assessment.

Qualifications you could gain:

BTEC Level 2, NVQ Level 2 Diploma or Apprenticeship

Progression:

Level 3 course, Advanced Apprenticeship, Employment

Entry requirements:

At least 4 GCSEs at A*-C (English and Maths preferred) or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit or Distinction Level. There will be an interview and/or assessment.

Duration:

2 Years

Qualifications you could gain:

BTEC Level 3 (and Extended Level 3), NVQ Level 3 Diploma or Advanced Apprenticeship

Progression:

Higher Education: Degree/HND/HNC, NVQ Level 4, Higher Apprenticeship, Employment

Level 3 qualification

Duration:

1 or 2 Years

Qualifications you could gain:

HNC, CertHE, NVQ Level 4 or Higher Apprenticeship

Progression:

BTEC Level 5 qualification or Employment

Who is the course suitable for?

This course is suitable for those seeking a career as a skilled Site Carpenter or Bench Joiner. Site Carpenters will be working on a construction site or domestic and commercial premises, and will be working to given specification within first and second fixing (door frames, hanging doors, boxing pipes, window frames and floor joists). Bench Joiners will be working in a joiners shop to given specifications producing wood products for use by the site carpenter such as doors, window frames and stair cases. The use of machinery in the production of products plays an important part within the Joiner’s shop.
Both routes will deliver the necessary skills and knowledge for the specific roles, with additional training in safety, working practices and moving and handling resources.

What is required to join this course?

- 5 GCSEs grade A*-C including Maths and English or the equivalent
AND
- Successful College interview/assessment

What will I learn, how will I be assessed and what qualifications will I achieve?

Site Carpenters will have the opportunity to study:
- Carrying out first fixing
- Erecting structural carcassing
- Constructing a timber frame entrance

Bench Joiners will have the opportunity to study:
- Producing setting out details for routine joinery products
- Constructing an under stairs cupboard
- Manufacturing routine joinery products

How will the course be taught?

Assessment is continuous throughout the course. There will be exams and ongoing practical assessment at College and in the workplace. Apprentices will be required to gather evidence from work. Whether you are a Bench Joiner or a Site Carpenter there are several mandatory competency based units to complete.

What are the career/progression opportunities?

- Further employment in the industry in roles requiring higher levels of skill and knowledge
- Advanced Apprenticeship in Wood Occupations
- A varied career working on new builds or refurbishments, or in specialist areas such a furniture manufacturing
