Back to previous page Back to previous pagePrinter Friendly Version Printer Friendly Version

Who is the course suitable for?

People who are already working in the construction industry, or looking for a career change in the trade. Please note: those not already employed in the construction industry will only be able to complete the Diploma.

What is required to join this course?

The prospective candidate should have an employer who is able to cover the range of work required to complete an NVQ Level 2, and have D or above in both english and maths GCSE.

What will I learn, how will I be assessed and what qualifications will I achieve?

All practical work is industry related, with the course blending practical and theory elements into units of competence. These are the set standards required by the awarding body and will be explained to the candidate during the induction period. The qualification is a Diploma in Bricklaying and an NVQ, this will give the candidate a good grounding in brickwork and general construction. It will be taught over two days in the first year (Monday/Tuesday) and one long day in the second year (Monday 9.00am-7.30pm).

It is gained by studying set units relation to the award criteria, and passing a number of assessments. These are:
• Health and Safety multi-choice test (this will allow you to apply for a CSCS card, with a possible exemption for candidates who already have it)
• Setting out of buildings
• Erecting low scaffolds
• Practical Phase test
• Formal exams Candidates will be encouraged to work individually, with the support and direction of tutors with many years' experience within the construction industry. The use of books, short lectures, computers, plans, pictures, individual research, real life components and materials are a few tools your tutors will use to develop your understanding of brickwork. Practical trowel skills, calculation, problem solving skills and research skills.

How will the course be taught?

Candidates will be encouraged to work individually, with the support and direction of tutors with many years' experience within the construction industry. The use of books, short lectures, computers, plans, pictures, individual research, real life components and materials are a few tools your tutors will use to develop your understanding of brickwork.

What are the career/progression opportunities?

The progression route will be to gain a full NVQ Level 2 in Brickwork by working as a bricklayer within the British building industry. This will require the candidate to provide evidence of their everyday brickwork activities, and be assessed by a tutor in their work environment.
Following the Diploma and NVQ Level 2, the candidate could progress on to the Diploma Level 3 in Trowel Occupations, which will cover advanced standard brickwork, and is the access route in to the NVQ Level 3 qualification for supervising groups of tradesmen. Candidates are encouraged to think of the Diploma as the first stepping stone to future personal development, as there are many directions in the building industry to follow all with good pay, and real job satisfaction.

What additional resources are required and what should I bring to the first class?

Safety boots, overalls (optional), a lever arch file, a pack of 10 file dividers, pen & pencil.

Are there any other costs involved?
